The famous English guitarist Jeff Beck, who rose to fame with the group “The Yard Birds” before embarking on his solo professional career, died at the age of 78, his family announced on social media yesterday.
His family said that he died peacefully the day before yesterday, after contracting meningitis suddenly.
Jeff Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, first in 1992 for his work with the Yard Birds and as a soloist in 2009. In 2015 Rolling Stone magazine named him the fifth best guitarist of all time, one place ahead of blues superstar B.B. . King.
Last year, Beck released his latest album, “18”, which contained 13 tracks, mostly recordings of old clips with Hollywood star Johnny Depp.
Beck said at the time, “We prepared carefully only songs that we like. We did not put a specific design for them.”
Beck won his first Grammy Award in 1985 for the song “Escape”. He then went on to claim the golden statue seven times during his career.
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi mourned Jeff Beck on Twitter, saying he was devastated to learn of his death.
“Jeff was such a sweet guy and an outstanding guitarist – no one else will come along like Jeff Beck,” he wrote. “His playing was so special and amazing! We will miss him.”
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who is also a former Yard Birds member, said Beck’s style was unique and his imagination had no limits.
“The Six-String Warrior is not with us now so we can enjoy the spell he can weave around our moribund emotions. Jeff could have made music out of thin air… Jeff, you and your millions of fans will miss you.”
