Damon and Thales to produce German MKS 180 frigate to the future – Tech

Damon Skalde Naval Shipbuilding and Thales signed on November 17, 2020, a contract for the delivery and full integration of Thales’ mission and combat systems for the four MKS 180 class frigates contracted by the German Navy. The system will be designed by Damon and built entirely by the German shipyard, under Damon’s project management.

Recognized at € 1.5B, the contract reflects Thales’ leading position in naval global integration. It will be executed in collaboration with a substantial number of German subcontracts at the naval centers of Thales, Hengelo (Netherlands), Kiel and Wilhelmshaven (Germany).

Underlining this contract is the certified cooperation of the German and Dutch naval industries, which, with the participation of the Netherlands Ministry of Defense, often includes several joint opportunities for Damon and Thales in the Netherlands to innovate within naval shipbuilding projects. The project underscores the ambition of Daemons and Thales to collaborate with industries participating in shipyards and high-end European naval programs.

Thales’ missions and combat systems include the Comprehensive Tacticos Combat Management System and the AWWS (aforementioned Water Battle System) fire control buster. The contract includes a four-ship system, logistic services and several land-based testing and training sites, as well as options for one or two additional ships.

AWWS is a state-of-the-art battle suite that helps ship crews continuously analyze and adapt complex environmental attacks and adapt to strategic environments and deploy resources. The AWWS will be paired with APAR * Bl2, a developed version of Thales’ proven AESA * multifunction radar. In 2019, Thales signed an AWWS development contract for new m-frigates for the Belgian and Dutch navies.

Over the years, Thales has been awarded several large contracts by European NATO navies, thanks to an innovative solution and its credibility as an industrial partner. These contracts make Thales a partner of NATO’s actual war system.

The first ship of the MKS 180 class will be commissioned in 2028. The entire program will run for ten years.
