Hidden Gems: Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Cube’ is a Cult Classic – Binged

Another week, another title. For this week, we are going back to the year 1997 to take a look at this niche science fiction horror flick – The Cube. For its unique and Kafkaesque setting, the Canadian independent film gained a cult following worldwide. With a 90-minute runtime and a budget of USD 350,000, The Cube made over US $ 8.5 million at the box office.

At first glance the cube is exactly what you’d expect from a low budget, late 90s indie flick – (barely) decent acting, not great sets or cinematography among other things. But the film’s premise, along with its captivating narrative and intelligent pacing, makes it difficult to take the viewer off screen. Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic have given it favorable reviews.

The plot of The Cube is as follows – A group of six persons is trapped inside a room, which is in the shape of a cube. All six individuals come from different walks of life, none of whom remember how they were prior to their entry to their current position. All six faces of the cube have inseparable doors that can be opened and this leads them to the rooms they are identical to, with one catch – the room can be trapped by boiling.

Nicole de Boer, Nikki Gudagni, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller, Julian Richings, Wayne Robson and Maurice Dean Wint were part of the main cast. The film was written by Andre Bijelik, Graeme Manson and Vincenzo Natalee, with Mehra Meh and Betty Ayer as producers for the film. Vincenzo Natalie, the aforementioned Canadian-American horror writer, co-wrote and directed the film.

The film’s success led to the production of two more films – a sequel and a prequel, both of which did not go along with the original flick. Lionsgate, which holds the rights to The Cube, is currently looking to develop a fourth film, but the idea has been in limbo for quite some time.

The cube is currently available for streaming Amazon prime video.
