With Nationwide’s 5.4 million new plastic payment cards every year, the alliance aims to save 35 metric tons of carbon – a single card production will save 7 grams of carbon compared to a standard PVC payment card. By using recycled PVC from printing and packaging industrial waste, IDEMIA’s solutions destroy plastic waste, which significantly reduces carbon emissions. It also helps in reducing landfill space, energy consumption as well as land and water pollution.
Nationwide will introduce cards made using recycled plastic from early spring of next year and is the first high street lender to do so. Resolution to eliminate single-use plastics by 2025 nationwide.
This alliance reinforces IDEMIA’s determination to bring changes in the financial services industry. It is part of GREENPAY ™, IDEMIA’s eco-friendly all-embedding package deal for customers from financial institutions around the world.
IDEMIA Executive VP Financial Institute Amanda Gourbault said: “IDEMIA is proud to be a long-term partner of the Nationwide Building Society and is pleased to support IDEMIA’s nationwide sustainability goals with recycled plastic payment card product. This type of card is manufactured from waste materials and as plastic significantly reduces waste, it is one of the most common problems in our modern world. The migration to recycled plastics is also beneficial because it saves energy, limits oil consumption and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helping to reduce global warming and reduce air pollution. At IDEMIA, we take sustainable development very seriously and we are using our expertise to create and promote more responsible and environmentally friendly solutions through our portfolio of sustainable solutions for GREENPAY, financial institutions and FinTechs . Our decision to provide environmentally friendly PVC cards from IDEMIA to its members for nationwide decision making confirms our objective to provide green solutions that help protect our planet – because banking cards do not cost the Earth needed “.
Claire Tracy, Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer at Nationwide Building Society: “We pride ourselves on being the first high street lender in the UK to offer cards made from recycled plastic. Our members tell us that, despite difficult times, they still want to make the world a good place. Earlier this year we became carbon neutral for energy and emissions for all internal operations and society vehicles. We set aside £ 1 billion for our members to borrow at a special low interest rate if they want to make their homes greener. Today’s news is an important step for us to achieve net-zero by 2050 and to eliminate single-use plastics by 2025 in the UK. “
