FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been prosecuted by Swiss prosecutors appointed to investigate his alleged secret meetings with the country’s former chief public prosecutor, a judge has confirmed.
“I assure you that a confrontation hearing was held within the framework of the procedures led by Dr. (Ulrich) Federer and myself,” Hans Maurer wrote in an email to AFP.
“However, I cannot comment on the timing, scope and purpose of this hearing,” he added.
At the time, the French newspaper Le Monde and the German Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported that Infantino was questioned on Tuesday in Zurich, where FIFA is based.
Since July 2020, Infantino has been facing judicial proceedings for “inciting abuse of power”, “violating official secrecy” and “obstructing criminal proceedings”.
Under former President Joseph Blatter, the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) suffered from a major scandal, as a result of which many officials were arrested, interrogated and prosecuted.
