Trailer Talk: Regina King’s directorial debut ‘One Night in Miami’ is a celebration

One Night in Miami ‘is a film about four Bhagwat African American icons – Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Sam Cook and Malcolm X – whose ideas, abilities and actions helped shape the future of his fellow man. The film is a fictionalized version of an actual night spent between the four giants and Regina King does an extraordinary job for her first feature debut.

“You brothers, you can move mountains without lifting a finger”. Malcolm X’s iconic line of how the trailer starts and the Golgapps feel as one realizes that they were more like a prediction than a word encouragement is simply fantastic. We then see a montage of all four icons at the top of their fields – Minister Malcolm X campaigning for the public, Muhammad Ali beating an opponent in the ring, Jim Brown running on a football pitch and Sam Cook singing on stage Huh.

They all come together in a hotel room in Miami, just four of them, the night Muhammad Ali becomes the world’s heavyweight champion. The four have some lighthearted moments, as shown by another short video montage where they sing and dance in the room. But then the tone of the trailer changes as we see several black families move out of their homes and throw “oil grenades” at the shops. These four try to use the power they have tried to change the world around them – by giving voice to people.

‘One night in miami’Is based on the play of the same name which was written by Kemp Powers, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The film stars a brilliant cast with Malcolm X as Kingsley Ben-Adir, Cassius Clay / Muhammad Ali as Ellie Gore, Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown and Leslie Odom Jr. as Sam Cook. Raja’s film premiered earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival, becoming the first film to appear alongside a black female director. Although the film’s average rating is imdb, film critics and Rotten Tomatoes from around the world are singing praises about the film and Regina King.

Regina King’s ‘One Night in Miami’ will be released internationally on 15 January 2021 on Amazon Prime Video. Watch the trailer for the critically acclaimed feature below:
